How to create the perfect cult 101 - A Guide for the Followers of Set
Written by Nycci Coats

So, you want to create a cult huh? Or perhaps you want to join one...wondering what you are getting into? Take a seat, relax, and learn...

Now, most of you may have heard about some of the more famous cults - the Branch Davidians or Heavens Gate. You will find that cults often have many things in common. They have appeal. Whether it is to the media or to the intellectual world. Cults are exciting and adventurous. They incite curiosity to many, and that in turn appeals to almost anyone.

For the purpose of describing the perfect cult, I am going to be taking information that can be found in White Wolf's Sins of the Blood.

To start any cult, you need one basic thing. You need a charismatic leader. You need someone who appeals to people, who is intelligent and ingratiating. Now, a cult can be formed by either one person or by a council...however, there is always only ONE primary leader. The Council generally consists of the eldest and wisest among the group. You would normally have the following people serving on a council, depending on how large your cult is (sometimes you may have the same person occupying multiple positions. Be sure to take note on the emphasis of the mental, social and physical aspects of the positions)...

1- Morality person - This person is in charge of both making sure group morale stays up, and seeing to the morality (or lack of) the members of the cult. These people will generally lead the rituals and the sermons of Set and deal with recruiters. These members of the council need to be very strong in terms of mental abilities. ((think Pack Priest)).
2- The Head protector of the Cult - This person is generally regarded as the strongest. It is their duty to watch over the safety of the cult in terms of temple security and personal security of the cult members. ((think pack lieutenant))
3- Recruitment - This person is responsible for basically being the leader of the recruitment. This person needs to be charismatic, ingratiating and well spoken. They are generally the first person new recruits will meet and its up to them to "entice them" into joining your crusade against the Aeons.

INFLUENCES

Cult members should always look at some of the most important influences when creating a cult.

Occult - You can bring in knowledge that can be shared. Your occult influences can also help with recruiting members from other occult-based groups. College pagan groups and role-playing groups are generally very easy recruits.

Media - You can either use your media influence to keep the media away from your cult, or you can use it to carefully publicize your cult. After all, when most teenager and young adults tend to stay home to watch television, what's wrong with a bit of subliminal signs here and there?

Bureaucracy - You can use bureaucracy to obtain the land deeds to your cult main area. And then subsequently use it to bury all deeds and the such in so much paperwork it would take a miracle to find it...keeping the feds out of your hair is also useful.

Church - Perhaps one of the most useful and often overlooked influences, Church can be used to get your cult registered as a sanctioned religion in a particular state or county. You can also use it to keep the church and its members from attacking your cult.

Legal - Yet another way to get your cult recognized as an official religion...and then sue the bastard that tries to tell you that you can't have it official as a violation of your First Amendment rights!

Health - You can use health to make sure you have medical supplies for your mortal members, as well as blood supplies for the living impaired.

University - College recruiting...enough said.

Other influences are important also, and can be used to great avail. These are just a few suggestions on how best your influences can be put to work when creating your very own cult.

Okay, I got my people...now what do I need to create my cult?

What a good question! There are several things you are going to need.
First, you need your charismatic leaders. You need people who can persuade, cajole, and get people to follow them without question.

Second, You need those good leaders to have a good dogma or at least a good speech prepared. ((More on how to do that later)).

Next, you need to start bringing your mortal cult members into the fold. The first thing you are going to need to do, is isolate them from their friends and their family and from the outside world. That world does not exist. There is only the cult, and they are their one true family that will never leave them. Cut off the phone, the computer...everything. This is their world now.

Next, you need to establish some sort of control or power structure. Each member enters at the lowest possible point in the pyramid. Those above you know what is best for you. Those above you know what food you should eat, what mannerisms you should display, what you should think or read, or even do. What they believe is best for you is your fate and your destiny. Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated.

Now that you have your new members isolated, an established control maintained, etc., you need to take the next step. You not only need to TELL them what to do, you need to make them THINK differently. Isolation, forced meditation, exhaustion, humiliation, behavioral modification, chanting, set schedules, hypnosis, anything that deals with the psyche is what you need to start forcing upon them. The body will do what the mind tells it to do. Control the mind and you control the body.

Now that you have established the mind control, begin to implement suggestions with it. Psychological control and manipulation is at its best at this stage. Make the person easier to handle. Break their will to resist, and with it their will to self-preservation.

Next, employ peer pressure. Show them they are loved. Use the manipulation to make them be forced to make choices. Will they stay with the people that love them and care for them, and have shown them the true path, or leave them and be forced to wander the cruel world that has abandoned them and left them in the cold? Phrases such as "Don't you love us anymore?" or "You are with us or against us!" are often useful. Remember that the two most powerful needs for humans are acceptance and love. Offer those early on and you should have no problems here. Remember to remind them that the cult has accepted them without any questions or hesitations...the real world would not be that kind.

Next, show the person they are important. Set or their god chose them. Set himself came to the prophet and stated that THEY were worthy of his teachings. Make them feel they are leaving a lasting impression and that they are worth something. Let the member fill his ego on being personally chosen and needed.

When the recruits enter the cult as members, give them a big ceremony making them official members. Make them the central figure in a ceremony and pomp. This makes for excellent recruiting strategies in the future.

Next, make sure that you cut off even more information from the outside world. The "Mundane World" is nothing. You will be harmed out there. Only Set and his teachings matter. This helps to keep any negative information from being spread to the new recruits and general membership.

Now that they are members, it is time to look at things slightly different. You have done a lot of work getting them into the cult. Building up their egos and their self-confidence. They have striven to prove themselves to the Cult, to find acceptance and love. Now you must destroy all of that. Make it well known that they are dispensable. If they screw up and damage the reputation or safety of the cult, they can be easily replaced. Make them understand they do not live in a democratic society, which what the council or the leader rules is law, and they must abide by it. Make an example of an errant member who has messed up by executing them or sacrificing them to Set, praying that he may find glory in his eyes in the Underworld, when he could not find it among his loyal followers.

Show your followers that without the cult, they are nothing. Death happens every day out there. People die and are not remembered. But in the cult, you are remembered. You are honored, and you are made a god.

Finally, you need to break them of the chains that bind them. Make them understand that ends will justify means. Death happens...its okay. It hurts, its sad, but its necessary. It is a natural cycle. Your old life is behind you. Now is the time to revel in your new life with your new boundaries. So what if you have never killed someone before...

These are some of the most important things you need to keep in mind when you are creating your cult.

What should I teach to my followers?

Now ladies and gentlemen, You need to create what is known as dogma, or a set of given beliefs for your cult.

First, you need a goal. Ask yourself the following questions:
1. What purpose does this cult serve?
2. Who do I want to have follow me?
3. Do I want to have a "cover religion"? (Para-religious, extraterrestrial, political, sexual, psychological, commercial...))
4. How do I want to have my followers look upon me as? A god? A leader? A prophet?
5. What other things should my cult do? ((Obviously you can't just worship Set 24/7))
6. How many people do I want to have in this cult?

Next, choose a leader or a council and their assistants.
1. Is the leader going to be mortal?
2. Is the leader going to be kindred with a mortal ghoul who oversees during the day?
3. Will there be one or more leaders? If so, who?

Next, choose your ways of establishing control.
1. Will you limit childbirth?
2. Will you make the members pay a due?
3. How do you intend to stop information transfer?
4. How do you intend to establish the basic needs?

The final thing you need to do, is to establish your dogma.
1. Do you intend to start the newbies off with a light dose of Set (such as portraying Set as the god Dionysus from Greek mythology)?
2. Do you intend to strip them of humanity?
3. Do you intend to build them up and then tear them down in terms of their beliefs?
4. How do you intend for your beliefs to keep people subordinate?
5. Is your god vengeful or good? Or both?
6. And most importantly, what is your dogma going to entail? Are you going to emphasize money, or power or blood? Will you teach about the body being blessed and a shell for the immortal spirit? Will you emphasize the human need for acceptance and love? Or perhaps teach that upon death the members would obtain immortality? Make them understand that they must adore you as a leader. If they do not, they are not devout enough. Those who are not devout do not receive the benefits ((and often find themselves "Accident-prone")).

Questions like these are always very important to answer before you write up your first draft of your new religion for your Cult.

Now, you are going to need a place to hold your cult meetings. Normally, you would want to build a temple for this. However, it is a recommendation that you build a temple elsewhere, and create your Cult haven in another part of town, one that is preferably away from civilization and other aspects. This makes the information management easier. Create a place that has large gathering rooms, dormitory style housing where men and women are separated (no need to entice them when the religion should do it for them). Have a place where they can go to eat. Make sure each person has a job within the cult, even if it is only the person who washes the dishes. Every member contributes and every member gets rewarded. This is VERY important. Humans are like dogs at times. Give them a reward and they will generally keep doing the actions that please their masters most.

What are some cults of note that I can research for additional information?
1. Branch Davidians
2. Heavens Gate
3. People's Temple
4. The Order of the Solar Temple
5. The Jombola Cult
6. Aum Supreme Truth
7. Aetherius Society

These are just a few real life cults you can explore for further information on how to build and maintain a cult.
